Grand Theft Auto VI: Everything We Learned From the Extended Look

Elan |

After years of waiting, Rockstar Games has finally given fans a much closer look at Grand Theft Auto VI ... and it certainly looks like the wait could be worth it!

First revealed on Netflix on 27 August 2026 before becoming available through Rockstar's official channels, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look gives us around 27 minutes of footage captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5. The extended look gives us a better idea of what it will actually be like to explore Leonida, play as Jason and Lucia, take on missions and get into the kind of trouble that Grand Theft Auto fans know all too well.

So, what did we learn?

Welcome Back to Vice City

The extended look gives us an even better glimpse of Leonida, the fictional state that serves as Grand Theft Auto VI's setting, including the return of the iconic Vice City. Inspired by the vibrant streets, beaches and culture of Miami, Vice City brings a modern take on one of the most recognisable locations in the series.

From bright neon streets and busy roads to sun-soaked beaches, waterways and more rural locations, the footage shows just how detailed and varied the world looks. Rockstar appears to be taking the open-world formula even further, with densely populated environments, highly detailed interiors and plenty happening around the player.

And, as you'd expect, Leonida isn't simply somewhere to drive through. The footage showcases a world packed with opportunities for exploration, crime and plenty of distractions along the way.

Jason and Lucia Take Centre Stage

At the heart of Grand Theft Auto VI are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, two criminals whose relationship is at the centre of the story.

The extended look puts a much greater emphasis on how the pair work together. In one sequence, Lucia drives while Jason leans out of the car to fire at pursuing police, while another scene sees the two separated during a mission, tackling different parts of the action.

Players will also be able to switch between Jason and Lucia, giving us more freedom in how we approach certain situations. The footage suggests that their relationship will be an important part of the experience, rather than simply having two protagonists for the sake of it.

Rockstar's official story description sees the pair caught in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida after an easy score goes wrong, forcing them to rely on each other if they want to survive.

More Than Just Crime and Car Chases

While Grand Theft Auto has always been known for driving, shooting and causing chaos, the extended look shows that there will be plenty more to do across Leonida.

Among the activities spotted in the footage are:

  • Boating and water-based activities
  • Basketball
  • Scuba diving
  • Racing
  • Parachuting
  • Shootouts and police chases
  • Exploring Leonida on foot and by vehicle

These glimpses suggest that Rockstar is continuing to build a world where players can step away from the main story and simply explore, experiment and get into trouble.

A More Immersive Grand Theft Auto

Perhaps one of the biggest takeaways from the extended look is just how much more detailed Grand Theft Auto VI looks.

The footage showcases highly detailed characters, environments and interiors, while the world feels busier and more alive than ever. From the smallest details inside buildings to huge outdoor environments, Rockstar looks to be pushing the series further with its current-generation technology.

The gameplay also appears more dynamic. Missions can involve different approaches, characters can work together or separately, and even getting caught by police looks set to require more thought.

The six-star wanted system is also returning, while police can reportedly recognise characters by their appearance, meaning changing clothes could become an important part of escaping the authorities. Vehicle theft also looks more sophisticated, with certain cars requiring different methods or equipment to break into.

The Biggest Grand Theft Auto Yet?

There's plenty of reason to believe Grand Theft Auto VI could be Rockstar's most ambitious game yet.

According to details shared with The New York Times, the game's map is around three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's playable map, while an internal playthrough reportedly lasted around 80 hours, including the main story and some optional content.

That gives us an idea of the sheer scale Rockstar is aiming for – and we're still only seeing a fraction of what Leonida has to offer.

The Countdown Is On

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with pre-orders already available.

Pre-ordering also comes with the Vintage Vice City Pack, which includes a range of in-game bonuses inspired by Vice City's past, including the '55 Vapid Stanier, a garage in Ocean Beach, outfits and hairstyles for Jason and Lucia, and a special weapon pattern.

After more than a decade since the release of Grand Theft Auto V, the latest look at Grand Theft Auto VI has given fans the clearest picture yet of what Rockstar has been building.
